Memorable mostly as the film that introduced filmgoers to Tom Cruise and Sean Penn, both of whom nearly steal the film from its nominal star, Timothy Hutton. Hutton, fresh from his Oscar for Ordinary People, plays the top cadet at a private military school run by George C. Scott. When the announcement is made that the school will be closed, the inmates take over the asylum with military precision. Hutton is caught among his sense of duty to mentor Scott, the rabid militarism of cadet Cruise, and the rational arguments of Penn, as Hutton’s best friend. Then a cadet kills one of the cops responding to the crisis, and suddenly this game of playing soldiers takes on a warlike atmosphere. But director Harold Becker can’t hold it together; Hutton isn’t up to carrying the film, and the tension rapidly drains from the Darryl Ponicsan script. –Marshall Fine

An entertaining smart-mouthed cop movie from 1988, a mixture of crude farce and head-banging martial arts action that never quite gels. Chow Yun-fat’s prancing, mugging, literally pants-wetting performance is a measure of how far he is willing to go to show his fans a good time. Chow’s buddy-buddy partner is played by the muscular Chinese-American martial artist Conan Lee, who’s convincingly ferocious, and curvy starlet Li Chi plays a heroin smuggler who decides to go straight (and cook dinner) after Chow slaps her around a little. The martial arts elements are more satisfying than the crass comedy. The director, Lau Kar-leung (a.k.a. Liu Chia Liang), was a kung fu master a few years back: his Master Killer and Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu are venerated by aficionados, and his comeback film, Drunken Master 2, is one of Jackie Chan’s best. Lau packed the supporting cast with kung fu veterans like Liu Chia Hui (the Master Killer himself), Ti Lung, and David Chiang. The coolest action sequnce is a “sword fight” in which the combatants face off with chainsaws. –David Chute

The story of the woman who insisted she was Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the last czar of Russia, is complicated. This 1986 telefilm makes it even more so because it’s one of those “fact-based” dramas. Its most annoying invention is Anastasia’s romance with a prince who never actually existed. Fiction aside, the first two-thirds of the 210-minute movie are dramatic and captivating. The Romanov family is imprisoned and executed, yet Anastasia reappears years later in Berlin in 1923; Amy Irving becomes the iron-willed yet fragile Anna who battles to be recognized by the remaining Romanovs. Gently paced and beautifully shot and staged, the film only starts to lose steam when Anna comes to New York to make her case in the American press. It takes a bunch of Americans, including Susan Lucci as a stateside Romanov relative, to make the tale seem common. Back in London, Olivia de Havilland is a treasure as the dowager empress who won’t recognize Anastasia, although there is much evidence in her favor. The film is a great introduction to the mystery, despite its fiction-augmented recounting of history. After watching the movie, get the book it was largely based on, Anastasia: The Riddle of Anna Anderson by Peter Kurth, for a gripping read that just might make you believe in this princess. –Valerie J. In a very smart first 10 minutes, new toy-company owner Denis Leary tells his crew he wants toys “that play back.” Hence the small soldiers land in Anytown, U.S.A., and the loner kid Alan (Gregory Smith) opens them up before they are supposed to be on the shelves. Those military-grade chips sure make them smart and give the toys plenty of pithy retorts to boot. Plenty of violence, er, action, most of it fun enough. The vocal talents, including Tommy Lee Jones, Frank Langella, and cast members of The Dirty Dozen are inspired characters, the humans less so. With Gremlins director Joe Dante at the helm, it plays like a sequl to that ’80s fantasy. Amazing visual effects, of course. –Doug Thomas
